:: Four Days Post Surgery – Bad Day!

SUNDAY – Today has definitely been the worst day for Ella so far. No milestones today just lots of rest, panting and swelling. I think something is definitely going on with the swelling, hopefully it’s all normal but I have to admit my concern is rising. I can tell she is just not feeling well, she even had a visit from her Grandpa and didn’t act as excited as with her other visitors on the days before- and Ella loves her Grandpa!

The swelling in her tummy is getting a lot worse and she has what appears to be a rash or something on it. Ella has been panting pretty hard this evening which is a new development. She hasn’t been able to sleep at all but has remained very still on the couch with just a few potty breaks. I even had to hand feed her tonight, she didn’t even want the chicken!!

We are headed to the vet in the morning to get her bandages off so we will see what they say, hopefully they will say this is normal and will go away soon. Praying that Ella is able to sleep tonight and rest comfortably. Fingers and paws crossed!!

If Ella still has a bandage wrapped around her, ask your vet if you can remove it. Compression bandages can provide discomfort and may exacerbate bruising, and most dogs don’t need them. Jerry was sent home with no bandage and did well. Sometimes we feel vets bandage for the people more than the dog.

Best wishes for Ella feeling better soon.

We hope the visit with the vet tomorrow goes well, and that he can put your mind at rest that your beautiful girl is ok. Holly stopped eating, too, several days after her surgery. I could barely get her to eat chicken broth, let alone her kibble. I found that offering her small amounts more frequently worked better than her usual two meals a day. You’ve probably already tried that, but just in case you hadn’t I figured I’d mention it. Also, ask your vet about using Pepcid AC or if he can prescribe an anti-nausea drug for her. When Holly underwent chemo they eventually prescribed metachlopramide (I think that was it) for nausea and it helped alot. I wished I had known to ask about something after her amp.
We’ll keep all fingers and paws crossed for Ella!

I think it is the bandage and it could be some of the meds. Let me know how it goes

I hope Ella is doing better today. Hugs to you and her! Stay strong for her as hard as it is…
My dog wasn’t wrapped either…but maybe due to the fact she is a rear amp..not sure.

We are keeping our paws crossed for Ella. The first couple of weeks really are the worst, so hang in there. It gets better – we promise. If you have concerns, our best advice is to talk to your vet. After all, they are the experts.

Ella is doing much better today, thank you for asking!! We went to the vet and they took her bandages off, her incision looks really good, it is not even red and barely has any bruising- I am very impressed with it! As far as the swelling in her belly it was caused by the bandages pushing the fluid away from the incision area which I guess is good as it kept the fluid from gathering around her incision which apparently is why the bandaged her. The surgeon said that dog’s are less likely to get a seroma if they are bandaged? They said the fluid will go away and we should just massage it and can put ice on it.
Ella is very sleep today and seems to be resting comfortably. I think the bandages were making her uncomfortable! So for now all is well!
